Safety Officer | Prominent Hill Mine


National Group are seeking an experienced Safety Officer to lead safety, environmental and training functions at the Prominent Hill Mine in South Australia.

National Group has been successful in securing a long-term contract with BHP at the Prominent Hill Mine to execute ROM and Stockpile Rehandle works. The Safety Officer position will work closely with the Project Manager, Supervisors and client representatives to establish strong systems, clear processes and a positive safety culture from the outset.

This is a hands-on site role responsible for developing, implementing, and managing the site Occupational Health & Safety Management System (OHSMS), supporting effective risk management, and driving safe, compliant work practices across all site activities.

About the Role

As the Safety Officer, you be responsible for coordinating and managing health and safety systems across the Prominent Hill contract, with a strong focus on OHSMS development, risk assessments, incident management, compliance and continuous improvement.
You will play a key role in ensuring work is planned and completed safely, risks are identified and controlled, and National Group meets its legislative, client and internal safety obligations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement and manage the National Group site OHSMS for the Prominent Hill contract
  • Lead and promote a strong safety-first culture across ROM & stockpile rehandle mobile plant activities
  • Create, review and maintain risk assessments, SWMS, procedures, registers and other site safety documentation
  • Facilitate and support risk management processes including field-level risk assessments, inspections, audits and critical control checks
  • Ensure compliance with WHS legislation, site standards and National Group policies and procedures
  • Conduct incident investigations, identify corrective actions and monitor close-out to prevent recurrence
  • Support supervisors and site leadership with pre-starts, toolbox meetings, safety interactions and field-based safety coaching
  • Maintain accurate safety records, reporting requirements and compliance documentation
  • Work collaboratively with the client and National Group management to improve safety performance and drive continuous improvement

What You’ll Bring

  • Proven experience in a Safety Officer, HSE Advisor or similar site-based mining safety role
  • Strong knowledge of Australian WHS legislation, and risk management principles
  • Experience developing, implementing or maintaining OHSMS documentation and site safety systems
  • Confident ability to facilitate risk assessments, incident investigations, audits and site inspections
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to influence behaviours and build effective working relationships
  • Practical, hands-on approach with the ability to support supervisors and crews in the field
  • Diploma of Work Health & Safety (BSB51319), Certificate IV in Work Health and Safety, or similar qualification desirable
  • Ability to follow sites clean-shaven face policy
  • Commitment to safety, compliance and continuous improvement
